A man who left a woman with a devastating brain injury has been jailed.

Amir Khan attacked the woman, who was known to him, in Hockley last year, stabbing her in the back of the head before calling the emergency services and claiming she had fallen over.

Despite Khan's lies, it was clear to paramedics and officers at the scene that her injuries could not have been accidental.

The injuries inflicted by 26-year-old Khan were not fatal, but left the woman he attacked with severe brain damage requiring round the clock care.

Khan was arrested shortly after the attack after doubts were raised about his story.

He gave no comment in interview and the weapon used in the attack was never found.

In May this year Khan, of Villa Road, was convicted of attempted murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison on 7 July.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Allen said: "This is a strong sentence which reflects the severity of this horrendous attack on an innocent woman

"We take violence against women and girls extremely seriously and DC Gemma Peckett in particular worked tirelessly to secure the charges and conviction in this case.

"This was a horrific attack which left a young woman with permanently life-changing injuries which not only ruined her life, but also those of her family and friends.

"We hope they can take some comfort from knowing he will be in prison for a significant amount of time."
