Police are investigating after a man died when a car hit railings on Birmingham’s Great Charles Street Queensway earlier today (Monday).

Officers were called just after 2.35am to the scene, at the junction of Great Charles Street Queensway and St Chad’s Queensway.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of medics the driver, who was in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, who was the sole passenger, was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital for injuries which are potentially life-threatening.

Investigators remained at the scene for a number of hours with the carriageway closed off in both directions until around 9am for examinations of the scene and initial enquiries to be carried out.

Investigations to establish exactly what happened are on-going, but at this stage, police do not believe any other vehicles were involved.

Specialist officers at the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are asking that anyone who has dashcam footage from around the time of the collision to get in touch.

Witnesses are being spoken with and anyone who is yet to speak to police is also asked to get in contact.
