A man has been convicted of murder after deliberately running over a father with a car, causing fatal injuries.

Michael Povey, 29, was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of killing 28-year-old Lee Baker on 21 July 2025. The court heard that Povey drove a BMW into Lee, forcing him backwards into a house on Ormscliffe Road, Rednal, resulting in severe head trauma that proved fatal.

The incident followed an earlier argument involving Lee, his brother, and three other men. Povey, who had become aware of the dispute, sought out Lee and his brother that evening.

CCTV footage showed Povey picking up two friends near the rear of shops off Ormscliffe Road before driving towards the brothers. Povey then mounted the pavement and struck Lee with the car. Lee’s brother narrowly avoided injury by moving out of the way.

After hitting Lee, Povey continued driving through a hedge and crashed into the front wall of a nearby property before fleeing the scene with the two passengers.

Shortly after the collision, Povey was seen removing a high-visibility vest and changing clothes at his home on Ryde Park Road, apparently to disguise himself. He then called emergency services claiming his car had been stolen and was being used to run someone over.

Police investigations uncovered Povey’s attempts to mislead authorities. Body-worn camera and CCTV footage contradicted his claims, showing him at the scene and overheard admitting, “I’ve just rammed them with my car.”

Povey pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice at the start of his trial but denied murder. The jury rejected this defense, returning a guilty verdict for murder.

Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell of the Major Crime Unit said: “Michael Povey used a vehicle as a weapon and callously fled the scene instead of taking responsibility. His lies were unravelled by our thorough investigation, leading to justice for Lee Baker and his family.”

A tribute from Lee’s family described him as “a loving son, father, brother and nephew” who “will be sadly missed.”

Povey is due to be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on 10 April 2026.
