Man charged with sexual assault against mounted police officer in the West Midlands

A 36-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault following an incident involving a mounted police officer in the West Midlands, with his court appearance set for August.
The charge comes amidst reports of inappropriate behaviour towards mounted officers, which police say may be linked to a social media trend.
Mounted police officers and their horses are a regular presence in the West Midlands, tasked with maintaining safety during large events and engaging with communities.
While most interactions with mounted officers have been positive, West Midlands Police say there have been an increasing number of inappropriate approaches.
Authorities stress that touching officers on horseback is only acceptable in emergencies, and such actions may constitute a criminal offence.
Furthermore, they say interacting improperly with riders could pose risks to one's own safety and that of others around the horse.
Inspector Nick Burton, manager of the West Midlands Police Mounted Unit, expressed his commitment to promoting the safety of officers and the well-being of the horses.
"Our horses and riders love being out and about interacting with people, and we're really pleased to see the positive reaction they get," Burton said.
"That said, we will never tolerate unacceptable behaviour towards them, and we are taking appropriate action against that."
