Police have arrested a man after a 24-tonne earthmover was stolen and driven through Wolverhampton city centre, damaging roads and street furniture along the way.

The incident began on Saturday (8 November), when officers received reports that the heavy construction vehicle had been stolen from an address in Staffordshire.

The earthmover crossed the border into Wolverhampton, with officers first alerted just before 5.40pm.

Despite attempts to stop it, the vehicle continued its dangerous journey, tearing up road surfaces and striking street furniture as it travelled through Bridgnorth Road, Compton Road West, and even onto the A4150 dual carriageway.

The chase came to an end at 8.15pm on New Road, Willenhall, where the machine was finally brought to a halt.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving, theft, failing to stop, taking a conveyance without consent, threatening to damage property, and using threatening or abusive behaviour to cause harassment.

He remains in police custody while enquiries continue.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or captured footage of the earthmover travelling through Wolverhampton to contact them.
