West Midlands Police have confirmed that there will be no official fireworks display in the city centre this New Year's Eve.

Last year, many people turned up at Centenary Square after online posts circulated about a non-existent show taking place there. Having seen the posts, many people travelled into the city centre and were left frustrated when they realised there was no show.

Police say that when large crowds gather for an event that does not exist, pressure is put on public transport and the emergency services as well as creating congestion in the city centre.

Officers are advising the public to treat any posts or comments on social media suggesting fireworks or large-scale events in the city with caution.
