There were hugs, tears and applause at Birmingham Airport this afternoon as passengers arrived on a flight from Dubai following days of disruption across the Middle East.

Jill had been on holiday in Dubai and was due home on Monday — before the situation escalated.

“I should have come home on Monday. And then this all developed, so, yes, it's been a bit of an emotional roller coaster,” she said.

Travelling with her husband and three grandchildren — all under the age of three — she described hearing “a few loud booms” and seeing “maybe a couple of flashes of maybe something being intercepted”.

“Our resort was lovely. They actually acted like nothing was happening. Opened the pools within two hours of things beginning to kick off that morning,” she said.

“But obviously there was the underlying anxiety that we all felt because we've got three very young grandkids with us.”

Back home, her youngest son in America was “worried sick” knowing his entire family were in Dubai.

When their flight finally touched down in the UK, she said there was a wave of emotion onboard.

“It was just such a relief. And when we landed, the airline got a round of applause, and a few people were crying. It was lovely.”

Now back on British soil, she added: “Just happy to be back in the UK.”

Also waiting anxiously in arrivals were Mel and Penny, whose son Jamie and daughter Honey had travelled to Dubai for a five-day break.

“They were having an amazing time,” they said, before describing how their children witnessed drones being intercepted on their first day.

The pair were staying at the Fairmont hotel and were in the lobby when one interception happened nearby.

“All the windows and doors blasted in through the lobby, so they kind of felt the full force of the blast,” they said. “They put each other's hands and then they ran for their lives and then everyone was screaming. People were saying, ‘Phone your family, tell your loved ones you love them.’”

Despite working in the corporate travel industry and managing to secure seats on today’s flight, Mel said the uncertainty continued until the very last minute.

“Even last night, because the US consulate was hit, which is not far from the airport in Dubai, and that's when they were en route to the airport. So we were still unsure whether this flight would take off.”

As the plane landed, emotions were high in the terminal.

“Super excited to see them. Emotional but I'm not allowed to cry,” she said with a smile. “Be really, really pleased to have them back on solid UK ground.”

It comes as the Prime Minister told the Commons the Government is “looking at all options to support our people” as airspace closures and cancellations continue to affect travel across the region.

Large areas of airspace remain closed, with airlines operating limited services while British nationals are being urged to monitor Foreign Office advice and register their presence.

But for families gathered in arrivals in Birmingham today, the focus was simpler.

After days of fear and uncertainty — their loved ones are home.
