Plans for housing redevelopment at former Edgbaston Masonic lodge recommended for approval
165 homes proposed at Clarendon Suites site, benefiting local housing provision
Major plans to redevelop the site of the former Clarendon Suites in Edgbaston to provide housing have been recommended for approval.
The proposal seeks permission to construct 75 townhouses and 90 apartments, transforming the former events venue into a welcoming residential development.
The site, known for hosting conferences and exhibitions as the Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire Masons until its closure in 2014, was demolished following a fire in 2019.
The new development envisions 165 homes complemented by amenity space, landscaping, and public realm enhancements.
A recent council report highlights the development's benefits, including family-suitable housing, green space, temporary construction roles, and improved biodiversity through the planting of 156 trees to replace the seven lost during construction.
While acknowledging minimal impact on the nearby Grade II listed 215 Hagley Road, the council officer asserts these concerns are outweighed by the project's advantages and recommends approval.
"The development promises a significant contribution to Birmingham’s housing needs, reactivating a long-vacant brownfield site," the council officer stated.
The scheme addresses local and national planning aspirations for affordable housing and anticipates social, economic, and environmental benefits.
Birmingham Council's planning committee is set to deliberate on the proposal on Thursday, 13th August, determining its future impact on the Edgbaston community.
