A 12-year-old boy is due to stand trial later this year accused of seriously assaulting a woman in her 60s, a court has heard.

He is also charged with unrelated allegations of intentional strangulation and theft.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared via video link at Birmingham Crown Court where no pleas were entered.

The court heard he was charged last month after a woman was found seriously injured at an address in Birmingham and taken to hospital.

Judge Simon Drew KC remanded him into secure accommodation following a brief hearing.

A plea and trial preparation hearing has been set for August, with a full trial scheduled for October.
