A number of Labour MPs in Birmingham and the Black Country are joining calls for Sir Keir Starmer to resign following last week's local election results.

Labour suffered heavy losses and now more than 80 of the prime minister's own MPs have publicly called for him to step down.

Four ministers have also resigned, including Birmingham Yardley MP, Jess Phillips, who quit as safeguarding minister. In a letter to the prime minister, she said: "deeds, not words are what matter", adding she felt she cannot serve under Sir Keir Starmer.

Paulette Hamilton, the Labour MP for Erdginton said: "Confidence is lost. Now, an orderly transition must follow, and change must come from the top."

Meanwhile, Tahir Ali, the Labour MP for Hall Green and Moseley, said: "The recent election results show a party in crisis."

In Dudley, the Labour MP for Halesowen, Alex Ballinger, is also displeased with the prime minister. He said: "I fear if we continue on this course, we risk handing the country to the far-right."

However, a statement understood to have been signed by more than 100 Labour MPs, and not organised by Downing Street, urged colleagues to come together behind the Prime Minister.

The statement seen by PA said: “Last week we had a devastatingly tough set of election results. It shows we have a hard job ahead to win back trust from the electorate.

“That job needs to start today – with all of us working together to deliver the change the country needs.

“We must focus on that. This is no time for a leadership contest.”

The prime minister insisting he's going nowhere ahead of what could be a big showdown later today.

Sir Keir Starmer will meet Health Secretary Wes Streeting this morning - who's seen as a major leadership rival.

Labour lost control of Birmingham - the UK's second city - after 14 years, with no party gaining overall control. Talks will take place to find a viable administration.
