Birmingham council leader loses seat as last votes counted
The results of Birmingham's local election have been confirmed.
The final council result has been declared in Birmingham, 94 hours after polling stations closed and after it took another seven hours to tally the votes on Monday, after a number of recounts on Friday.
The Labour leader of the council, John Cotton, lost his seat in Glebe Farm and Tile Cross.
Reform UK - which is the largest party in Birmingham with 23 councillors out of 101 - won one seat in the ward, while the Workers Party of Britain took the other one.
The party is led by George Galloway, who shortly before the declaration posted on X: “If we are cheated of this famous victory Legal Action will follow immediately.”
The Greens have 19 seats on the council, Labour 17, the Conservatives 16, the Liberal Democrats 12 and the rest are independents.
No party has overall control of the city council since none were able to gain the majority of votes.
Discussions will begin to form a viable administration.
