Police in Birmingham are stepping up their operation to prevent firework-related disorder, with additional officers deployed across key areas of the city tonight (Friday, November 7).
From 4pm, officers will once again be using Section 60 stop and search powers, allowing them to search individuals without needing reasonable grounds for suspicion.
The operation will also include Section 60AA powers, enabling officers to require people to remove face coverings where authorised.
The powers will remain in force within the designated area shown on police maps until 7am on Saturday, November 8, with officers continuing high-visibility patrols throughout the night.
It comes after two men were arrested on Thursday evening on suspicion of illegally throwing fireworks in a public place. Both remain in police custody while officers continue their investigations.
Meanwhile, two men arrested following an incident in which police officers were assaulted have now faced further action.
Ibraheem Iqbal, 21, has been charged with assaulting a police officer and is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court next month.
A second man, aged 22, was dealt with through a community resolution in connection with the same offence.
Birmingham Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce, warned that the misuse of fireworks would not be tolerated and urged people to stay away from gatherings involving dangerous behaviour.
He said those responsible for misusing fireworks could face prosecution, adding that people gathering to watch such incidents were also putting themselves at risk of injury.
Chief Superintendent Joyce said protecting the public remained the force's priority, with officers continuing to use available powers and resources to prevent crime and disorder.
Residents can expect to see an increased police presence across key locations tonight, with additional officers carrying out visible patrols and remaining on hand to respond to incidents quickly.
