Section 60 powers enforced amidst disorder involving fireworks
Police in Birmingham have made several arrests as part of an ongoing operation to tackle firework-related disorder.
Authorities engaged extra officers overnight, implementing Section 60 orders to aid their efforts in restoring public safety in key areas throughout the city.
During the operation, five individuals were arrested in relation to disturbances. This included two teenage boys apprehended for public order offences, failing to disperse when directed, and a third person suspected of possessing fireworks. Additional dispersals occurred around Bagot Street in Aston, resulting in two arrests for alleged police assault offences.
The operation will continue, involving Section 60 authorisations allowing officers to conduct stop and searches without reasonable grounds and requesting the removal of face coverings; these measures remain active until 7am tomorrow, 6th November 2026.
Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce emphasised the risks associated with misusing fireworks, stating: "This kind of behaviour is irresponsible and dangerous, and misusing fireworks is against the law. Our priority is the safety of the public, and we will continue to use all the appropriate powers and resources at our disposal to protect people and prevent crime and disorder."
