9 arrests after fireworks set off at buildings and officers
Police say groups set off fireworks near New Street and later on Bagot Street
Nine people have been arrested after fireworks were dangerously launched in Birmingham city centre overnight.
Police say groups set off fireworks near New Street and later towards buildings and officers on Bagot Street, though no one was hurt.
They described the act as "unacceptable disorder" adding that it began from around 9pm yesterday, and continued to at least 2:15am.
They say those being held are aged between 13 and 23, and were arrested in connection with public order, throwing fireworks and possession of an offensive weapon.
In a release on their website they said:
"We won’t tolerate such appalling actions and we’ll continue to have a visible police presence in and around the city centre. We also have a dispersal order in place.
"We want to be clear; anyone who is involved in such irresponsible behaviour risks being arrested and prosecuted.
"We’re focussed on ensuring the city centre remains a safe place for residents, visitors and those who work in the area."
