South Western Railway will implement an amended timetable this week following an extreme heatwave warning issued by the Met Office.

The railway company will reduce services on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday due to the rare Red Extreme Heat Warning, which affects much of the South Western Railway network.

In accordance with national travel guidance, passengers are encouraged to check schedules before travelling on Tuesday and only to travel for essential purposes on Wednesday and Thursday.

Reduced speeds mean journey times will likely be longer, and fewer trains will operate, resulting in increased passenger numbers. The amended timetable for Tuesday will be available from 02:00 on Tuesday morning, with the Wednesday and Thursday schedule updated at 02:00 on Wednesday. However, services may still face last-minute changes and cancellations.

South Western Railway is offering temporary ticket acceptance for alternative travel times across its network. Passengers using other operators should verify individual arrangements as they may differ. It's advised to stay updated via the South Western Railway website for the latest travel advice and ticket information.

Passengers planning to travel should remain hydrated by carrying water and prepare to ensure comfort throughout their journey.

Chief Operating Officer of South Western Railway and Network Rail Wessex, Stuart Meek, said:

“While we’ll be working hard to keep customers moving, the Met Office’s Red Extreme Heat Warning means an amended timetable will be in place with fewer trains on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

“In line with national travel advice, customers should check before travelling on Tuesday and only travel if essential on Wednesday and Thursday.

“If you must travel, please also remember to take precautions like bringing a water bottle with you and not boarding a train if you are feeling unwell.

“We’re sorry for the disruption this extreme heatwave may cause your journey and thank you for your patience as we respond to these record-breaking conditions.”

High temperatures can significantly affect railway infrastructure, such as tracks, signals, and embankments.
