A significant milestone has been reached in Basingstoke as contracts have been exchanged to develop a new flagship water and leisure destination.

This initiative marks the borough's largest investment in leisure and wellbeing in decades.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has partnered with Places Leisure to build and operate the new complex, which will replace the existing Aquadrome.

As of 1st January 2027, Places Leisure will also manage Basingstoke Aquadrome, Basingstoke Golf Centre, and Tadley Health and Fitness Centre.

The fresh new complex will include a competition standard swimming pool, water flumes, a modern gym, and indoor play areas.

There is also talk of adding padel courts and a health suite.

Councillor Onnalee Cubitt Cabinet Member for Major Projects and Business Engagement, expressed enthusiasm about the development:

"This is one of the most exciting milestones our borough has reached in many years,

"It marks the beginning of a new era for leisure, health and wellbeing in Basingstoke and it will redefine leisure in North Hampshire.

“We’re creating far more than a replacement swimming pool. We’re investing in a vibrant destination that will inspire people of all ages to be more active, healthier and happier.

"Whether it is children learning to swim, a family enjoying a day out, a club training future champions or someone simply wanting to improve their wellbeing, this destination is being designed with our residents in mind.

Dan Walker from Places Leisure echoed these sentiments, highlighting the focus on community-driven design.

Places Leisure will be bringing our expertise and experience to this project to deliver a high-quality facility, Walker said.

We look forward to working closely with local partners as we progress to the next phase to create a facility that reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.

During the transition period, the council, alongside Serco and Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust, aims to ensure uninterrupted services.

Luke Charlton, the contract manager for Serco, reassured customers of the dedication to maintaining service quality during this time:

"For the remaining months of the contract, it will be business as usual for the trust and our operating partners."
