Following the death of Gary "Stan" Stanley, a security officer killed at a shopping centre in Milton Keynes, thousands of people have signed a petition calling for better protection for those working in high-risk security roles.

The petition, known as “Stan’s Law,” aims to strengthen safeguards for security officers at locations such as shopping centres and public events.

It comes after 52-year-old Gary Stanley died after police were called to reports of a stabbing at Centre:MK on Saturday evening at around 5.10pm.

He was a security worker, according to the Security Industry Federation Trade Union.

Rory Wilson, aged 50, from Towcester, Northamptonshire, has been remanded in custody charged with murder and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Proposals for “Stan’s Law” include providing security staff with approved protective equipment like tasers, pepper spray, and batons, coupled with mandatory training to ensure safe usage.

Sarah, a local resident who started the petition, described Stan’s passing as a “harrowing reminder of the dangers faced by security officers every day.”

“These individuals work tirelessly to ensure our safety and deserve to be equipped with the tools and training necessary to protect themselves”.

Danny, who has known Stan for 40 years and works in NHS security in Milton Keynes, stressed the need for additional resources.

“I see daily the struggles we are put through to keep the public safe. Any help or extra training or equipment we can utilise would be beneficial to us working in the security industry and to those we are protecting.”

Local supporter Jemma added: “All that protect our community should be able to safely go to work and come home… If it’s more experienced training or safety equipment there clearly needs a change for today’s world.”
