The Diocese of St Albans has launched a voluntary initiative to gather information and listen to those affected by possible abuse or harmful behaviour connected to St Andrew’s Chorleywood from the 1980s through to the 2000s.

This move is in response to recent safeguarding disclosures suggesting there may be others who were harmed during this time but have not yet had the chance to be heard.

The Diocese, in close collaboration with St Andrew’s, is aiming to provide transparency, accountability, and appropriate support to survivors. Individuals who wish to come forward can share their experiences either in writing or through a facilitated conversation with a safeguarding professional.

Survivor-centred approach

Participation is voluntary and designed to give individuals control over how they contribute. It is guided by survivor-centred and trauma-informed principles to ensure a respectful and safe environment.

The process, launched on 26th January 2026, is overseen by a safeguarding case management group, chaired independently by His Honour Philip Waller CBE.

“As Chair of the Safeguarding Case Management Group, and as a former chair of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel and a retired Family Court judge, I know how vital it is that we listen to those who have been harmed,” His Honour Philip Waller CBE said.

“This process is about creating a safe and respectful space for survivors to share their experiences, helping us to learn, to act responsibly, and to ensure accountability. I am committed to ensuring that this exercise is conducted with fairness, transparency, and the utmost care for those who come forward.”

Those impacted can share their experiences securely online or over the phone, with each account treated in line with safeguarding and privacy standards. The Diocese has assured potential participants that all contributions will be handled with care and respect.

The initiative will conclude with a public summary expected in June 2026.
