RSPCA rescues 20 rabbits after abandonment in High Wycombe park

The RSPCA South Bucks Branch is currently caring for 20 rabbits following their rescue from Hughenden Park in High Wycombe.

Initially, ten pet rabbits were discovered abandoned, including a family of eight: Bianca, a six-year-old mother, Huey, the father, and their six kits.

A few days later, two more four-week-old rabbits were rescued from the same location.

Compounding the situation, Bianca gave birth to ten kits on Friday morning.

The rescued rabbits were found in poor condition, particularly Bianca, whose underdeveloped back leg muscles suggest confinement in cramped quarters.

Now under the care of dedicated fosterers, the rabbits require further veterinary treatment and financial support.

The RSPCA has launched a fundraiser to aid their care, including health checks, vaccinations, and neutering.

Karen Cruickshanks, Head of Branch, emphasised the irresponsibility of abandoning domestic rabbits, highlighting their vulnerability without human care.

The branch is already home to over 100 animals, including 46 rabbits, reflecting the significant challenge posed by this abandonment.

The rescue correlates with new RSPCA data showing a 64% increase in summer cruelty cases over the last five years, underscoring the charity’s Cruelty Hurts Love Rescues campaign.

In June, July, and August last year, the RSPCA received over 6,000 cruelty calls, stressing the importance of their ongoing advocacy and welfare efforts.
