A man has been jailed in connection with an incident in Radlett, which left another man with a severe brain injury, from which he may never fully recover.

Oleksandr Moiseienko, 28, from Robert Street in London, was sentenced to a total of eight years and seven months imprisonment at St Albans Crown Court on Friday 24 October, after pleading guilty to Section 18 GBH at an earlier hearing.

On Friday 21 March, police received a call stating that a man had been found unresponsive inside an address in Gills Hill Lane, having sustained a severe head injury. He was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition where he remained in a coma for three weeks.

An investigation was subsequently launched by the Hertsmere Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

It was established that the victim had been hired to carry out renovations on the property, with Moiseienko also working at the address.

Enquiries revealed that Moiseienko and another man had arrived at the property on the day of the incident, where a verbal altercation ensued with the victim. CCTV footage showed him entering and exiting the property several times over the next 45 minutes, as the altercation continued.

At one point, he was seen to pick up a scaffold pole as he entered.

Then, just after 3.55pm, Moiseienko was seen to leave the property again, this time at pace and visibly panicked.

He approached a member of the public, stating that a man had been injured and needed an ambulance, before running off.

He was identified as a suspect and arrested on 26 March, before being charged with attempted murder and GBH.

Six days before he was due to stand trial, he pleaded guilty to GBH, stating that he had struck the victim to the head with a scaffold pole.

He is due to be deported after his sentence.

Detective Constable Mollie Goodwin, who led the investigation, said: “This was a shocking attack which left the victim with multiple, severe injuries to the head. He has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation and it is not currently known whether he will make a full recovery.

“No sentence will make up for what the victim has endured but I hope the conclusion of the case will allow him to focus on his recovery and move forward.”
