Patrick Joyce, a 62-year-old from Luton, has been jailed for four years after attempting to meet who he believed was a 14-year-old boy in St Albans.

Joyce was arrested on 13th November last year at Verulamium Park after engaging in sexually explicit communication online and via WhatsApp from the end of October.

Upon his arrival at the park, police officers seized a rucksack containing a red thong and lubricant and found a small knife in a sheath inside his car.

Joyce was charged with multiple offences, including engaging in sexual communication with a child, arranging the commission of a child sexual offence, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and possession of a knife in a public place.

He pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on 12th March.

Detective Constable Tom Campbell from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Child Online Safeguarding Team stated that while there was no physical victim in this particular case, Joyce's actions demonstrated his intent to meet and abuse a child.

Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to report offences, regardless of when they occurred. Specialist officers are available to provide guidance and support throughout an investigation.
