Luton Town Football Club has announced the departure of manager Matt Bloomfield following a disappointing start to the 2024/25 League One season. Bloomfield, who joined the Hatters in January from Wycombe Wanderers, is leaving the club alongside his assistant Richard Thomas, first team coach Lee Harrison, and first team analyst Ben Cirne.

Despite Bloomfield overseeing an improvement in results late last season—"a run of just two defeats in 11 games leading into the final day of the 2024/25 season"—he was ultimately unable to prevent Luton Town's relegation from the Championship after a defeat at West Bromwich Albion. With "performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One" described as "below the levels expected," the Board of Directors made the “difficult decision” to relieve the management team of their duties.

In a statement, the Board expressed gratitude: "The Board wishes to thank Matt, Richard, Lee and Ben for their efforts during a difficult period for the Club and wishes them the very best for their future careers."

For the interim period, Alex Lawless will take temporary charge of the team, aided by Paul Benson, Kevin Foley, and Kevin Pilkington. Their first assignment will be Tuesday night’s Vertu Trophy trip to Cambridge United. With two weeks of training ahead before the next league fixture, the club’s search for Bloomfield’s successor is underway, led by an executive committee made up of members from the executive team, recruitment, football staff, and the board.

Luton Town concluded their announcement: "The Club will be making no further comment at this time."
