A new campaign in Hertfordshire is urging drivers to stop when instructed by school crossing patrols to ensure children's safety on busy roads.

The ‘Stop Means Stop’ campaign, launched by Hertfordshire County Council, aims to remind motorists of their legal obligation to comply with the 'lollipop' signs displayed by more than 150 crossing patrols across the county.

By law, drivers must stop when the stop sign is raised by patrol officers, but council officials warn that some fail to comply, putting children and families at risk.

Cllr Paul Zukowskyj, the county council’s executive member for environment, growth and transport, said: “The vast majority of drivers do what they’re supposed to do, but it only takes one to knock a child over.

“Our school crossing patrols do a fantastic job. And they’re doing their level best to keep our kids safe. People need to abide by the law, and stop does mean stop.”

As part of the campaign, crossing patrol officers stationed at key locations are using body-worn cameras to capture violations, which will be reported to the police. They are also wearing high-visibility ‘Stop Means Stop’ tabards to further raise awareness.

Hertfordshire County Council is also promoting the campaign on social media, further reinforcing that everyone has a responsibility to follow the law and protect children and adults crossing busy roads to and from schools.

This campaign supports the council's broader road safety efforts and its push for more ‘active’ travel to school, such as walking or cycling, as healthier and safer alternatives to vehicle transportation.

Cllr Zukowskyj added: “With the campaign, we’re trying to raise the profile of school crossing patrols and the dangers they face if motorists don’t comply. People need to understand the crucial role crossing patrols play in protecting vulnerable road users.”

Motorists are urged to ensure they play their part in creating safer streets for Hertfordshire’s communities.
