With Bonfire Night fast approaching on the 5th of November, Central Bedfordshire Council's Trading Standards team is enhancing its inspections of fireworks retailers to promote safety throughout the area.

Starting in late October, officers will visit local retailers to confirm that fireworks are sold, stored, and handled safely and according to legal standards.

These inspections are part of the council's ongoing commitment to consumer protection, particularly important as firework sales increase for Bonfire Night.

Retailers will be reminded that selling fireworks to anyone under 18 is illegal and enforcement actions may be taken if breaches occur.

Councillor Liz Childs, Central Bedfordshire Council's Executive Member for Public Protection, said, "Fireworks can be enjoyed safely by families and communities when they are purchased from reputable retailers and used responsibly."

Childs also advised residents to be mindful of others when using fireworks, especially considering families with young children, older residents, and those with pets or livestock.

Residents are encouraged to buy fireworks only from reputable sources and look for UKCA or CE markings, indicating compliance with safety standards.

Anyone apprehensive about handling fireworks can attend professionally organised displays, which provide a safer alternative.

Aware of the legal regulations, people should avoid setting off fireworks in public places and adhere to the established time restrictions for fireworks use.

Concerns regarding the illegal sale or unsafe storage of fireworks can be reported to Trading Standards via email at [email protected] .
