A woman from Bedfordshire is calling on the Government to urgently ban liquid Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedures after it nearly cost her life.

Sasha Dean, who lives near Dunstable, had sepsis just three days after receiving a botched liquid BBL and was left in a coma in 2023.

“My family were called up to come and say goodbye. They gave me less than a 5% chance of survival I needed to be put into a coma to take over the breathing because everything was failing. I had a heart attack, my lung collapsed, my kidneys were failing, and pneumonia.

She adds, “I could just tell that I was gravely ill and at that stage I thought, ‘I'm going to die, aren't I’”.

Ms Dean wants to warn people of the devastating impact that it can have, as she says she wasn’t made aware of the risk involved:

“It was sold to me as simple as having your lips done – ‘It's the same filler, it's just more of it, it's a hyaluronic acid and your body produces that’ - So, it seemed like the perfect thing to do.

“It seemed it was going to make my dreams come true.”

She also says that the Government needs to take action, as “it's just too dangerous. It needs to be banned”.

“Many women have had to have their buttocks cut off. One woman was going to lose her leg.

“Some women have had occlusions where their arteries have got blocked, but because everybody's stories are so vastly different as to what could have caused it, I think it's just too dangerous.”

“It is literally a 50-50 chance whether you are going to be okay or you're not”, she adds.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: "This government is taking action to crack down on cosmetic cowboys and root out dangerous treatments.

“Our tough new measures will ensure only qualified healthcare professionals will be able to perform the highest-risk procedures.

“For anyone considering a cosmetic procedure, please check the provider’s qualifications and insurance - and avoid treatments that appear suspiciously cheap.”
