Police could have done more before Bedfordshire woman's murder, coroner concludes

A coroner's ruled failings by Bedfordshire Police helped lead to the murder of a vulnerable woman by her partner at her home.
Sarah Albone, who had multiple sclerosis, was murdered by Matthew Waddell in November 2022. Waddell is now serving a life sentence.
The senior coroner, Emma Whitting, found police failed to grasp the risk he posed, despite Sarah repeatedly telling officers she feared he'd kill her. They'd also failed to pursue offences against Waddell for coercive and controlling behaviour, continue criminal investigations into him and investigate concerns raised by Sarah's neighbour.
Her verdict was summed up as an ‘Unlawful killing to which police failures in recognising and responding to the escalating domestic abuse materially contributed’.
In response, the Chief Constable of Bedfordshire Police Trevor Rodenhurst said "Sarah's death was a tragic and horrific crime. Our thoughts remain with her family, friends and all those who loved her."
"Domestic abuse destroys lives and leaves lasting harm for victims, families and communities. Tackling domestic abuse and protecting vulnerable people remains one of Bedfordshire Police's highest priorities."
"We fully accept that there were opportunities where we could and should have done more to protect Sarah. While nothing can undo the pain caused by her death, we are committed to making every effort to continue to improve our response and professional practice."
Bedfordshire Police say they have made significant changes to strengthen their domestic abuse response. This includes increasing their use of Domestic Violence Protection Notices and Domestic Violence Protection Orders, appointing a specialist domestic abuse advisor and using improved technology to better identify risks.
