Firefighters say their response is continuing despite a major incident being stood down
Firefighters say work is continuing at the scene of a significant wildfire in the Peak District. despite a major incident being stood down.
Crews have been at Tintwistle Moor since Sunday 12th July 2026.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service says the response is now moving into a recovery and monitoring phase, as flames haven't been spotted since last week.
In a statement a DFRS spokesperson said:
"Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) has formally stood down the major incident that was declared in response to the large-scale wildfire at Tintwistle Moor.
"This reflects the significant progress that has been made over recent weeks by firefighters, partner agencies and specialist resources in bringing the incident under control.
"All firefighters from across the country deployed through National Resilience arrangements have now been stood down. The only National Resilience asset remaining in place is a High-Volume Pump, which continues to support operations.
"While the major incident has now been stood down, this remains an active incident and work continues across the moor.
"The fire remains contained and, encouragingly, no flames have been observed since last week.
"With one of the four sectors successfully handed over on Friday, firefighters and partner agencies continue work to monitor the three remaining sectors for any hotspots and reduce the risk of re-ignition. We are also working towards formally handing over the Arnfield sector in the coming days.
"We are now nearing the end of the response phase of this incident and will soon move into the monitoring and recovery phase. While this is a positive step forward, it is likely that our presence on the moors will continue for some time as we work to safely remove a significant amount of equipment from the area and support ongoing recovery efforts.
"The A628 remains open with temporary traffic lights in place. Please continue to drive carefully and take extra care when travelling through this traffic management system.
"We would like to thank our firefighters, partner agencies, landowners, local communities and everyone who has supported the response throughout this incident."
