A man and a woman have died in a serious crash which closed the M1 in South Yorkshire for almost 12 hours overnight and into this morning.

Police were called at around 11:36pm last night to reports a dark grey coloured BMW had left the road southbound between junctions 37 and 36, close to Barnsley.

It had then collided with a tree.

The driver, a man in his 20s and a woman, also in her 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their families are being supported by specialist officers.

Witnesses, or anyone who captured dashcam footage in the area at the time, are being urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101.
