South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service: 'Stay away' from ice 'at all costs'
A yellow weather warning of ice is in place until 10am today
With temperatures plummeting this week in South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire - there's a call for people to 'avoid' walking on ice 'at all costs'.
A yellow weather warning for icy conditions is in place across Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham & Chesterfield today.
Chris Tyler from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has this advice for us:
"Stay off the ice. Keep children and pets away from the ice.
"If anybody does fall in, just call 999 and ask for the fire service.
"Don't bother trying to save anybody yourself - it's much safer just to call the emergency services.
"Winter drowning - unfortunately, most people die within three metres of safety.
"The majority of water fatalities in winter never intended to get into the water - they either end of slipping into the water or try to rescue their pet or someone else who's fallen in.
"If you do fall in accidentally, the key thing to do is to try and float to live.
"Lie on your back, keep your head out of the water, try and control your breathing, shout for help, and then try to get yourself out.
"If you see someone struggling in the open water, one option would be to try and help the person in difficulty by offering them a reach pole - if there's one available.
"The most important thing though is to ring 999 and get the emergency services rolling as quickly as possible."
A further yellow weather warning of snow is forecast to be in place later this week across South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire.
