Sheffield Wednesday match day parking at Hillsborough Park agreed for next season
The club has agreed with Sheffield City Council to continue a licensing deal to use the main car park off Parkside Road on 28 match days a year.
Sheffield Wednesday fans can continue to use the Hillsborough Park car park on match days next season.
The club has agreed with Sheffield City Council to continue a licensing deal to use the main car park off Parkside Road on 28 match days a year.
Wednesday gets exclusive use of the pay and display car park for four hours prior to kick-off until 90 minutes after the final whistle. The deal goes back to 2009.
The council’s charity trustee sub-committee yesterday (July 13) approved the deal as the park is owned by a charity, of which the council is sole trustee.
A report to the committee said: “The proposed licence will generate a significant and guaranteed income stream for Hillsborough Park Charity, contributing towards the ongoing maintenance and management of the park.”
The sum charged was restricted because it is a commercial arrangement.
Members also agreed to increase the hourly cost of pay and display for Hillsborough, Graves and Endcliffe parks from £1 an hour to £1.10.
This is in line with a recent car park charges review and is the same rate as now charged by the council outside the city centre.
The income is retained by the charitable trusts that own the parks and is used for upkeep and maintenance.
Coun Matt Smith said he was keen to see the fees kept as low as possible, given the cost of living crisis. He said a 10% rise “is a little bit much”.
Deputy chair Coun Mark Whittaker said he thought the cost should be permanently linked to what the council charges elsewhere.
