Wildfire on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop is finally out after two months
Derbyshire firefighters stand down after one of their longest-running operations ever
The wildfire that has been burning on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop for over eight weeks has finally been extinguished according to Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS).
Firefighters issued a stop message yesterday, (Monday 24th August) shortly before 13:00, signalling the end of their operational response.
The fire began on 24th June and escalated to a major incident by 12th July, with firefighters from across Derbyshire and the nation along with partner agencies.
Though the firefighting efforts have now finished, DFRS will continue work over the next few days to retrieve equipment used in tackling the blaze.
Responsibility for the site has been handed back to United Utilities, the landowner, and DFRS will provide ongoing advice and support during the recovery period.
Area Manager Nathan Stevens highlighted the significant effort involved, stating:
"The issuing of the stop message marks the end of a significant and complex incident that has required a sustained response over many weeks. This incident has demonstrated the incredible dedication of people right across Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service."
Area Manager Stevens extended his gratitude to various agencies, individuals, and communities that contributed to the firefighting effort, acknowledging their collective role in overcoming the challenges posed by the wildfire.
