South Yorkshire Police say they've 'saved Christmas' for some - after managing to intercept a lorry containing £21,000 of stolen parcels.

Reports had been received on 4th December of suspicious activity involving a HGV at Woodhall services on the M1, with suspects believed to be stealing items from parked lorries.

A roads policing officer swiftly located the vehicle on the M1 Northbound, where the driver refused to stop, leading to a pursuit.

During the chase, the driver went the wrong way around a roundabout and appeared to be heading onto the wrong carriageway of the M1 , posing a significant risk to other road users.

To prevent further danger, the officer used their vehicle to push the lorry off the road, colliding with a sign and bringing the pursuit to an end.

Two occupants of the vehicle, both in their 30s, were arrested in connection with the incident.

The male driver was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft from a motor vehicle, possession of drugs, and various traffic offences.

The female passenger was also arrested on suspicion of theft from a vehicle.

Both suspects have been released on police bail as investigations continue.

Sergeant Dan Pugh, of South Yorkshire Police, said:

“Those who use the road network to commit criminality are more likely to take greater risks to evade officers and the consequences of their crime," Pugh said.

“During this incident, the officer’s swift actions in stopping a driver intent on fleeing, regardless of the risk he posed, prevented a serious risk to the public.

“Their professionalism and quick decision-making reflect the dedication from our team in keeping our roads safe.”
