A five-day operation on South Yorkshire's motorway network has seen 110 drivers being caught committing various offences by officers using an unmarked HGV cab.

Officers in marked cars worked with police in the unmarked lorry to spot people breaking the rules of the road, before pulling them over.

Among those stopped were 41 HGVs, 36 LGVs, and 36 cars.

Ten drivers were caught using mobile phones while driving, 20 drivers were not maintaining proper control of their vehicle, 40 drivers were not wearing seat belts, and four individuals were driving without due care.

Additional offences included speeding, using a lane marked with a red X and stopping on the hard shoulder.

PC Nathan Warrilow, leading the operation for South Yorkshire Police, said:

"We are always thankful for the opportunity to use the unmarked HGV from Highways England as part of our operations and on-going work to create safer roads."

"These operations are not about targeting those in larger vehicles, but it cannot be shied away from that these vehicles, often weighed with freight, can cause devastating consequences on our roads.

"We are committed to doing all we can to enforce against those who pose a risk and educate drivers, but we cannot be everywhere. Everyone must take responsibility and stop thinking it won’t happen to you. You could die, be seriously injured, or end up in prison. Do your part."
