South Yorkshire set to get 2,200 new homes in housebuilding programme
The Government is giving the region £249 MILLION for affordable housing
South Yorkshire is set to receive a significant boost in affordable housing, with funding for around 2,200 new homes under the government's £39 billion Social and Affordable Homes Programme.
The announcement was made today, 25th August, by the Prime Minister and Secretary of State, Angela Rayner, revealing nearly £10 billion earmarked for housing development across England.
South Yorkshire is expected to receive around £249 million, focussing on creating homes available for Social Rent, the most affordable housing option for families.
The funding aims to support families struggling with temporary accommodation by providing access to secure homes.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed the importance of stable housing facilities:
"No child should be raised in a hostel room and no family should wait ten years for a front door of their own."
Secretary of State Angela Rayner spoke on the vital need to resolve housing scarcity:
"I know how important fixing this is – because I’ve been there."
In alignment with the government's devolution strategy, Mayoral areas outside of London, including South Yorkshire, are granted increased control over housing investments totalling over £2 billion.
This effort forms part of a broader commitment to build 1.5 million homes during the current Parliament, emphasising significant revival in council-led construction.
Investment extends into strengthening councils' capacity, ensuring effective planning and execution of innovative housing solutions.
Nationally, councils, housing associations, and various partners are pivotal in bringing the Social and Affordable Homes Programme to fruition and increasing access to secure homes for families in need.
