South Yorkshire Police seized 3,855 vehicles in 2025 for driving without insurance, averaging over 10 seizures per day.

The force has issued a reminder to all drivers to ensure their vehicles are properly insured as the new year begins.

Roads Policing Sergeant Martyn Micklethwaite explained that driving without insurance is not a victimless crime.

According to police, uninsured drivers are often more likely to commit further offences, such as operating unroadworthy cars, driving dangerously, or engaging in pursuits that put other road users and officers at risk.

Insurance is not only a legal requirement but is designed to provide financial support to victims of road traffic collisions. Compensation allows victims to repair or replace vehicles and adapt their lives after serious injuries.

Sergeant Micklethwaite said: “Law-abiding drivers end up paying the price for uninsured motorists through higher premiums. It is not a victimless crime — someone, somewhere, always pays for the actions of those who choose to drive without insurance.

“Seizing vehicles is everyday business for officers across the force because we know that those who fail to insure their vehicle are more likely to take greater risks; this will not be tolerated.

“We do meet people who make genuine mistakes and have not understood their policies or the changes to their circumstances, such as points and convictions, and as the new year gets underway, I urge all drivers to review your policy and double check your cover.”

Uninsured drivers face fines of at least £300 and six penalty points, with potential court appearances and driving bans also possible.
