Sheffield Wednesday has announced the signing of Dutch defender Sil Swinkels from Premier League side Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old centre-back joins the Owls on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Having moved from the Netherlands to Villa Park in 2020, Swinkels climbed the academy ranks before making his first-team debut in the FA Cup against Liverpool in 2024.

He also gained vital experience through multiple loan spells, including at Chesterfield last season.

Speaking to the Sheffield Wednesday website, Swinkels said:

"The project brought me here. The people here made me feel like it’s a long-term vision and that’s something I want to be a part of. We all know the ambition and where the club want to go."

"At a club like Sheffield Wednesday, it’s natural that you're going to have competition for places – it's a healthy environment and I'm looking forward to it. I'm very happy to get this over the line."
