Sheffield Wednesday have named former Stockport County CEO as the club's Sporting Director - a new role for the now League One side.

Simon Wilson also previously had roles at Manchester City, Melbourne City and New York City FC.

He later served as Chief Football Officer at Sunderland.

His appointment comes as new owner David Storch looks to steady the ship at Hillsborough and to push for a return to Championship football.

Speaking to the SWFC website, Wilson said: “Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most historic clubs in English football, with a unique identity, a passionate supporter base and a matchday atmosphere that immediately stands out.

"The energy of Hillsborough and the passion of our supporters are powerful strengths, and I strongly believe successful football clubs understand their advantages and build around them.

"That energy and identity should be reflected in every part of our club - particularly in the team we build, how we play and the culture we create.

"Success will require patience, consistency and alignment. We are not looking for quick fixes, but to build a football operation capable of delivering sustainable success over the long term.

"I’m excited to get started and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Sheffield Wednesday’s journey.”
