Sheffield United falter as Blackburn seal Championship safety
Blades suffer disappointing defeat at Bramall Lane
Sheffield United faced a challenging evening at Bramall Lane as Blackburn Rovers secured their Championship survival with a 3-1 victory over Blades.
Blackburn took control in the first half, with Yuki Ohashi scoring twice and Japan team-mate Ryoya Morishita adding another, leaving Sheffield United trailing 3-0 at half-time.
Despite Harrison Burrows pulling one back for the Blades early in the second half, it wasn't enough to prevent a defeat, putting a dent in their hopes for a top-10 finish.
Blades boss Chris Wilder expressed disappointment after a promising run of back-to-back wins against Hull and Watford, criticising his team’s lack of energy and spark in the first half.
“We were just miles off of it first half. No energy, no spark,” Wilder said.
“Against a counter-attacking team who sit in and make it hard, finding that first goal is important. We should have found it after 35 seconds, but we didn’t."
He acknowledged Blackburn's defensive setup and lamented United's inability to break it down and secure the crucial opening goal.
“The first goal is important and it’s really disappointing yet again, from our point of view, the first goal and the things that we could do better.”
Meanwhile, Blackburn boss Michael O’Neill, currently combining roles as Rovers manager and Northern Ireland manager, reflected on the dual role's challenges and indicated talks regarding his future would soon take place.
