Candidates confirmed for upcoming Sheffield Southey by-election
Councillor Gareth Slater resigned in early July, sending his south east Sheffield seat back to the polls.
Five candidates will stand to become the new Southey Ward councillor at a by-election on 27 August.

Former Lord Mayor Jayne Dunn has been selected as the Labour Party candidate, three months after losing her Southey seat to Reform UK’s Yvonne Sykes.
She said: “The result in May was painful. I loved serving our area and I have reflected carefully on what residents told us. May’s results sent Labour a clear national message, and we have heard it. With Andy Burnham now as Prime Minister, Labour is showing it has listened by taking practical action on the cost of living.
“I know personally what it is like to raise a child on benefits, live in social housing and worry about keeping a roof over your head. I also know the difference that the right support, education and opportunities can make. That experience has always shaped my politics and why I fight for people who too often feel overlooked.”
Reform UK will put forward Paul Jakeman, who has a background in the building industry.
Paul Jakeman said: “Me and my family are strong supporters of grassroots football clubs, local schools and men’s mental health charities because strong communities are built by people who care for one another.”
Leader of Reform UK’s Sheffield councillors, John Hesketh said: “Mr Jakeman had emphasised to me that Southey really needs more and better housing for local residents and he pledged to campaign for housing improvements in Southey.”
The Green Party have nominated Daniel John Moy, a 24-year-old DevOps Engineer who studied at the University of Sheffield.
Mr Moy said: “My core issues that I want to focus on are around cost of living, and the revitalisation of our culture with respect to proper third spaces for people to be in and engage with their community, revitalisation of community centres to give people a place to go and do activities in their areas and allow them to help their community thrive by actually being allowed to live in it.”
Daniel Gage has been nominated as The Conservative Party candidate, after standing in the Birley ward in May.
The Liberal Democrats have selected Oliver Edward George.
