Sheffield mum launches petition against planned McDonald’s restaurant near home
McDonald’s has applied to for permission to build a drive-through at the corner of London Road and Broadfield Road.
A Sheffield mum has launched a petition opposing a McDonald’s drive-through restaurant near her home and children’s school.
Rafia Hussain, who has four children and lives in Lowfield, launched the petition on change.org, whichcurrently has 132 signatures.
McDonald’s has applied to Sheffield City Council for permission to build a drive-through and car park at the corner of London Road and Broadfield Road.
Rafia said she is pleased to hear that the planning and highways committee meeting tomorrow (January 13) has been recommended to reject the proposal.
The plan, which was submitted last year but withdrawn in July 2025, has attracted protests and opposition.
Rafia said she had spoken to parents outside both Lowfield and Sharrow primary schools to encourage them to sign the petition, which she launched a few days ago. Many weren’t aware of the planning application, she found.
She said: “There’s one on Queens Road, there’s one on Archer Lane. It’s just such a very bad location for them wanting a McDonald’s.
“There’s schools nearby, there’s parking problems. The application says it would create almost 100 jobs but there are only 25 parking places.
“They haven’t got enough places for their staff, let alone somebody coming to buy stuff.
“My kids go to Sharrow school and we’re always at Mount Pleasant Park, it’s very local to us.
“They go to swimming and gymnastics near there. It’s going to be a nightmare in terms of traffic congestion.
“We’ve got 40-plus restaurants on London Road. We don’t need another fast food chain in this area.”
