Detectives are investigating two incidents of gunfire which happened in Sheffield over the weekend.

Officers were alerted to the first incident at 9.42pm on Saturday, where shots were reportedly fired towards a property on Oxford Street. Firearms officers were quickly called to the scene.

No injuries were reported, but it was confirmed that a child was inside the property at the time of the incident. Officers are working to ensure the child is safeguarded.

Just over 20 minutes later, at 10.06pm, officers attended another scene following reports of gunfire at a block of flats on Edward Street.

Evidence of shots being fired was also confirmed at this location, with no injuries linked to the incident.

Police remain at both locations as investigations continue -with the two incidents being treated as linked. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles of South Yorkshire Police said:

"Gun crime puts innocent lives at risk, and in this case, it could have resulted in a serious or fatal injury to a child."

"Everyone should feel safe and protected in their own home, and those involved in gun crime clearly show a callous disregard for the safety of our communities.

"We are treating these incidents as linked, and investigations are fully underway to gather evidence, talk to witnesses, and ultimately find the person or people responsible for pulling the trigger.

"Thankfully, on this occasion, no one was injured in either incident - but next time, it could be a different story."

"There will be an increased police presence in the Oxford Street and Edward Street areas today, and I would urge anyone with information or footage that could help detectives investigating these cases to please contact us.

"I will reiterate that gun crime has absolutely no place here in South Yorkshire. We are determined to put an end to it, but we need your help to do so."
