People visiting Sheffield Christmas markets advised 'not to panic' if they see heavy police presence

South Yorkshire Police tell us they're taking steps to reduce the chances of any terrorism taking place in the city centre

There's a reminder for people in Sheffield City Centre not to be 'alarmed' by a 'heavier than usual' police presence in the area.

The force in South Yorkshire tells us their aim is to 'proactively' disrupt any criminal activity around the Christmas markets.

That includes potential acts of terrorism - as Sergeant John Simpson explains:

"The threat level of a terrorist attack remains 'substantial' at this time.

"In terms of the Christmas markets in Sheffield and across the country, they've been extremely well attended and there's been no issues so far.

"So, it's been a good Christmas period thus far.

"We're just trying to create a difficult environment for people who might be aiming to conduct some hostile actions around here.

"You will see a highly visible police presence, but we will tactically deploy plain clothed officers as well.

"The 'substantial' threat level hasn't changed for a considerable amount of time nationally, but we never want to get complacent and we want to make the environment for the public as safe as possible.

"Please come and speak to our officers - we're happy to talk about these tactics.

"If you do see anything suspicious - please do report it to us - you will never be wasting our time."

South Yorkshire Police insist this type of work is all part of Project Servator - which you can read more about below:
