Man arrested as police treat terraced homes fire in Sheffield as arson
Five properties in Grenoside area suffered damage
Investigators are looking into what caused a fire in the Grenoside area of Sheffield, which ripped through five terraced homes.
Two of them in Fox Hill Road suffered significant damage yesterday morning (Thursday 23rd July 2026).
No one was seriously injured, but two people did suffer minor injuries.
A 59-year-old man arrested by police is being questioned on suspicion of arson and criminal damage.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:
"At 3.54am (Thursday 23 July) officers on patrol in the Fox Hill area of Sheffield became aware of a large fire in fields near to Fox Hill Road.
"Officers and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and several houses were evacuated.
"Two men were treated for minor injuries. Thankfully, no major injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Several properties were significantly damaged by the fire.
"Officers arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage – arson endangering life, and criminal damage – arson not endangering life. He remains in police custody at this time."
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service posted updates on social media.
