A Rotherham school for children with learning difficulties has been granted government funding for refurbishments and to build a new block on the main site.

Newman School in Whiston, Rotherham, specialises in supporting children and young people with a range of learning difficulties and those with complex medical needs.

Following a request by the Department for Education (DfE) in March, 2026, Rotherham Council has been granted funding from the Strategic School Improvement Capital Budget (SSICB).

The funding is to help new responsible bodies managing a school increase the school’s condition, such as in times of intervention transfers.

This followed decisions by DfE to re-broker the existing Multi Academy Trust arrangement at Newman, and bring in another Trust, TEAM Education Trust, to run and manage the school.

A recent education report presented to the council cabinet has revealed that the funding will provide a new build block on the main Whiston site, and a refurbishment of the school’s listed corridor.

A contractor has been secured for the works which are scheduled across 2026/27 and 2027/28.

In 2022, a £4.5 project started at the school to provide a facility to replace the Upper School buildings.

The former pre-World War II rest sheds were demolished and replaced by six new classrooms, toilets, personal care rooms, group rooms, a library, soft play room, and a reception area.
