A man has been handed a nine year jail term after helping to set fires and hurling bricks at police during disorder in Rotherham last year.

32 year old Matthew Crossland, of Everill Gate Lane in Wombwell, admitted to violent disorder and arson with intent to endanger life at Sheffield Crown Court, where he was sentenced today.

He was spotted on CCTV throwing planks of wood and bricks at both the hotel and the police officers attempting to protect it.

The Holiday Inn Express in Manvers was housing a group of asylum seekers at the time of the disorder, which came in the immediate aftermath of the Southport killings.

Crossland was also seen adding wood to a fire set outside the hotel and was identified after removing as face covering he was using to hide his identity.
