A South Yorkshire Police dog's been hailed a hero - after helping catch a wanted man in Sheffield.

Officers tried to stop a car on Abbeydale Road on Monday (23rd March) suspecting that the driver was someone they wanted to speak to.

When the car wouldn't stop - even ramming police vehicles that formed a blockade - the occupant ran-off.

That's when PD Maverick - who's a 2 and a half year old Belgium Shepherd - was deployed and helped capture the suspect.

He turned out to be 29 year old Zaheer Ahmed, of no fixed address, who was detained on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, criminal damage to a vehicle and being wanted on recall to prison.

He's subsequently appeared at Sheffield Magistrates court on Wednesday and been sentenced to 12 months behind bars, was disqualified from driving and ordered to pay £500 fees.
