Upgrades to a free-to-use pitch and putt golf course in Doncaster have been unveiled to start the summer, after investment from Sport England.
The pitch and putt at Cantley Park, Doncaster, now has Disc Golf facilities, creating a “dual-use course” which can be used free-of-charge.
Ros Jones, the Mayor of Doncaster, said in a statement: “Over £45,000 of funding from Sport England has been invested so far in Cantley Park as part of the wider Doncaster Future Parks programme.
“Using this resource, we‘ve been working with England Golf, Disc Golf For All and Disc Golf UK to make enhancements to the venue’s free-to-use pitch and putt golf course, enabling players to enjoy everything that it has to offer all year round at no charge, as well as to install new, high-quality disc golf facilities.
“All of these works have been shaped by extensive engagement with residents and regular visitors to Cantley Park, in order to make the green space even more vibrant and welcoming and to ensure that it is meeting the needs of the local community. Further investments are planned for Cantley Park, and we look forward to sharing more detail about these in the near future.”
The investment includes upgrades all-weather golf tees, the installation of disc golf baskets, new golf flags and updated course maps.
Ahead of setting the 2026/27 budget, the City of Doncaster Council and Mayor Jones floated the possibility of introducing a charge to use the pitch and putt, but this was dropped from the Mayor’s final proposals.
Councillor Nick Allen, who represents Bessacarr ward, which includes Cantley Park, said: “The Future Parks plans look really exciting and it’s great that such a well used park is going to benefit in lots of ways. We do need a perimeter path around the park and thats something I’ve heard many residents say over the years.
“I am pleased the popular Pitch and Putt will now remain free of charge. I disagreed with the plans to charge for it because I thought charging would just put people off using it.”
He said the initiative should make the park “more popular” and added that he was “delighted” by the effort of council teams.
Mayor Jones added: “As we enter the summer season, I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage the public to get out there and see what other great activities and facilities are available right on their doorstep.”
