PD Luna retires after five years of loyal service to South Yorkshire Police
Luna has played a vital role in detaining offenders, locating missing people, and keeping communities safe
After five years of dedicated service, South Yorkshire Police’s beloved General Purpose Dog PD Luna is officially hanging up her harness.
Known across the force for her sharp instincts, bravery, and unwavering loyalty, Luna has played a vital role in detaining offenders, locating missing people, and keeping communities safe. Her final year on duty saw her secure 23 arrests—cases where suspects would not have been caught without a police dog.
PD Luna was on the frontline during the 2024 disorder and consistently ranked among the top-performing dogs in the force. Her outstanding contributions were recognised when she was crowned ‘Animal of the Year’ at the 2025 Force Awards.
Her handler reflected on their time together: “Luna has been an exceptional partner, she is brave, intelligent and has a contagious attitude for her work.
“She’s not just a working dog, she has become family, and I am so proud of everything she has achieved and thankful for the way she has protected me throughout and listened to me for hours on end while we have been on patrol.”
Though Luna is stepping away from active duty, she won’t be far from the action. She will continue to live with her handler and his other operational police dogs.
On what retirement looks like for Luna, her handler said: “Luna has showed no signs of slowing down, so her days will be filled with long walks, belly rubs, and plenty of playtime.”
South Yorkshire Police thanks PD Luna for her service, noting that her contributions have left a lasting impact on the force and the community she served.
