‘No plans’ to close library in Doncaster amid fears

There are “no plans” to withdraw library services from a community centre in Doncaster, the city council has said, as the current volunteer-led team which runs it plans to step back.
Following announcements on social media that the current operational lease for Intake Community Hub and Library would expire in 2026, the City of Doncaster Council has addressed speculation that the site would close.
Nick Stopforth, head of heritage and culture at Doncaster Council, said: “No decision has been taken to close the library and there are no plans to withdraw library services from the Intake area.
“The current volunteer group has advised that it intends to step back from operating the community library and community facilities from the building. In response, our Library Services are working proactively with local residents and volunteers to identify new committee members and establish arrangements that will enable the community library to continue operating in the future.”
Mr Stopforth said discussions were ongoing and local stakeholders will be kept updated on future plans for the centre.
He added: “We are encouraged by the interest already being shown and are committed to working with the local community to secure a sustainable future for the library. Our priority is to ensure that residents continue to have access to library services within Intake.”
A spokesperson for the Intake Community Hub and Library committee said: “It’s been a pleasure to run the Intake Community Hub and Library for the last 15-years. We wish the council success in finding another dedicated team to take it into the future.”
