A 71 year old woman has died following a crash on the M1 in South Yorkshire, which closed part of the road for much of yesterday.

Police were called to the M1 southbound between junctions 36 and 37, close to Barnsley, at around 9:23am.

A grey Volvo XC40 hit the central barrier and left the road.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 71 year man is being treated in hospital for serious injuries.

The family of the man and the woman are being supported by specialist police.

South Yorkshire Police are urging any witnesses, or anyone who captured dashcam footage, to get in touch on 101.
